Road guide: driving in Slovenia, Italy, Croatia and Austria

Many trips in this corner of Europe cross two or three borders in a few hours: Trieste Airport to Istria, Venice to Ljubljana, Salzburg to Bled. Each country charges for its motorways differently and has its own winter rules. Here is what to check before you drive.

Slovenia

  • Motorways and expressways require an e-vignette (weekly, monthly, half-year or annual), bought online before driving and linked to the number plate. Driving without it costs a fine of EUR 300–800.
  • No vignette is needed on the coastal expressway between Škofije and Izola, or on regional and local roads.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on regional roads, 110 km/h on expressways, 130 km/h on motorways.
  • Dipped headlights must be on at all times, also during the day.
  • Winter equipment from 15 November to 15 March: winter tyres, or summer tyres with snow chains in the car.

Italy

  • Most motorways (autostrade) are tolled: you take a ticket on entry and pay at the exit.
  • From 15 November to 15 April winter tyres or snow chains on board are required on roads where this is signposted.

Croatia

  • Motorways are tolled; the price depends on the distance driven.
  • From 15 November to 15 April winter tyres are required in winter conditions.

Austria

  • Motorways and expressways require a vignette; some tunnels and mountain passes charge an extra toll.
  • From 1 November to 15 April winter tyres are required when there are winter road conditions.

Useful numbers and documents

The European emergency number is 112 in all four countries. In Slovenia, roadside assistance (AMZS) answers on 1987. Carry your driving licence, ID or passport, the vehicle registration and insurance documents — and for a rental car, the rental agreement.

Or let someone else drive

A private transfer removes all of this: one fixed price for the whole car, with vignettes, tolls and fuel included, winter equipment provided by the carrier and a local driver who knows the border crossings. It is especially handy for one-way trips, where rental companies often charge extra for returning the car in another country.
