How to get from Trieste Airport to Piran, Portorož, Koper and Izola
Trieste Airport is the closest airport to the Slovenian coast, but it is in Italy, in Ronchi dei Legionari. Here is how to get from the terminal to Koper, Izola, Portorož and Piran — and what to know about the border, the vignette and parking.
The short answer
The fastest way is a car: a private transfer or a taxi goes along the coast past Trieste and crosses into Slovenia, straight to your hotel. Public transport is cheaper, but there is no direct line from the airport to the Slovenian coast, so you will change at least once.
By train and bus
The airport has its own railway station, connected to the terminal by a walkway, with trains to Trieste, Udine and Venice. Trains do not continue to Koper, Piran or Portorož; from Trieste you continue by bus towards the Slovenian coast. Timetables change with the season, so check the current connections before your flight — especially for evening arrivals.
By car: border, vignette and parking
- Italy and Slovenia are in the Schengen area, but police checks at the border are possible — keep a passport or ID card at hand.
- Slovenian motorways and expressways require an e-vignette, bought online before you drive and linked to the number plate. The coastal expressway between Škofije and Izola is an exception and needs no vignette.
- The historic centre of Piran has very limited car access; plan to park at the edge of town or check with your accommodation.
- In summer, weekends at the border and on the coast road can be slow — leave extra time.
Private transfer: how it works
You book online and see one fixed price for the whole car, with tolls and fuel included. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, follows your flight if it is late and takes you to the door of your hotel or apartment. You pay the driver at the end of the trip.
